We have had the privilege to work on some innovative Designer/Decorative film and Graphics projects over the years, here are a few I had pictures of. This really does not scratch the surface of our entire works but Cool just the same!

MESA 1ST BAPTIST CHURCH This was a fun project I did 10 years ago! The windows were bigger than Sun control film roll sizes, so we improvised with a Frosted Rice Paper border and the Stain Glass Did the rest! Glare and heat was the initial problem problem solved, and this beautiful design was an added benefit!

SCOTTSDALE AIRPARK PLAZA

it Was Important for the developer to salvage the classy Tuscon design he had envisioned! The doors are on the back of the suites and they all were in the tenant parking lot facing each other. Tenants belongings were visible from the outside and made the building look un kept. The frost also provided added benefits of Heat Reduction, Glare Reduction and UV protection! Now that inventory was no longer visible from outside Security was an unintended added benefit!

The project goal was to manage the light within the sanctuary. Church goers and Clergy alike were getting headaches from glare! Frost Film like this stops about half the visible light and all the UV light and an added bonus is the 40% heat reduction!

Thankfully this was cut with the plotter! This design with Frost Film was installed on interior glass partition walls and windows facing the exterior. The open outdoor feeling and look was the goal.

This project was completed back in 2006 with a simple frost film before we had a plotter to pre cut designs. We cut all of this by hand with rulers! Came out nice and only took two men three hours.

GUITAR CENTER PROJECT

This project was started in late May of 2013 and completed in stages by the beginning of July. We had to work around the construction process. The need was to hide the walls that were to be built over the windows inside from view, outside looking in. Originally the architect had specified Blackout on these windows but that will crack the double pane glass and if it did not crack it, most assuredly it would cause premature seal failure due to extreme heat build up. And these were big expensive windows! 

We recommended and installed the Double Frost or 3M San Marino Decorative Film on the double pane units to the sides and Blackout on the single pane above the showcases and entrance. The outside looks great as you can see. Go to any Guitar Center to see the inside and it will blow your mind! Just the inventory alone!

Our most recent was for the City Of Mesa Forensic Dept. The entrance had a key area that should have been Safety Glass when built and needed securing with 8ml clear Safety Film and Wet Glaze Attachement, and the Lower South west offices were suffering imbalances in the temperatures. The Glass was a high Quality Low E Double Coating but sometimes in Arizona, it is just not enough. We applied VKool 70 and Immediate results were felt with this wonderful Day lighting film! It allows in plenty of Light while reducing significant amounts of heat. Also, nothing we did changed the outward looking in appearance!

This Is The Prestige Truth! Facts About Spectral Select Films and Performance Measurements!

Total Solar Energy on Angle Performance Measurements - The True Angle, Not the 3M Prestige Angle!

Well I guess it's time for me to re address the whole "on-angle" Total Solar Energy Rejection measurement, "Issue". 
As many of you That are in the industry are aware, it is a measurement that is currently marketed by 3M to show the performance of their Prestige Window Film line. As a Consumer, "Buyer Beware"!

The whole premise is that the window film industry has always tested and derived the Total Solar Energy Rejection specification at 90° perpendicular to the glass. 3M reasons that the sun does not reside at 90° throughout the day, especially at the hottest part of the day, thus the need to create a film that (in their mind) performs better "on-angle." So the need for an "on-angle" measurement arises and subsequently the specification finds its way into their marketing literature. 

* Quick note: When Prestige first came out the Heat reduction percentages were on the sample cards and Tech sheets, like all the spec's had in the past. Within a few months, NEW cards came out without Heat Reduction Numbers and a New Term "TSER on Angle" and for Prestige Film Cards Only! Why? Because the heat reductions were no better than their Neutral Metalized film's, and therefore customers saw no benefit to upgrading! I still have the originals!

Despite the fact that the window film industry has never promoted such a measurement and the NFRC does not post angular performance data on the product certification labels, the general public is left to assume that this is a common measurement that sets one product apart from all others. 
The assumption gets propagated further when window film dealers add inaccurate statements and insert fiction into what is fact. 

For instance one dealer writes a rebuttal on their website in response to the statement: 3M's total solar energy on angle spec is not supported by the National Fenestration Rating Counsel 
Dealer's Response: This is true but this is new technology. No other manufacturer (glass or window film) can rate their product this way. The two hundred layers in the new 3M Prestige window films with nano technology make this new on angle specification possible. All window film manufacturers measure the total solar energy rejected at a 90 degree angle to the glass. 

Let us separate fact from fiction here…
Fact: The NFRC does not support the Total Solar Energy Rejection On-Angle specification. All manufactures measure the total solar energy rejected at a 90 degree angle to the glass.
Fiction: The statement that this is new technology and that no other manufacturer (glass or window film) can rate their product this way. Also the statement that it is 3M's multi-layer nano-technology that makes this new angular specification possible.
The reality is that any manufacture can easily report their performance ratings this way, if they wanted too. This specification is not made possible by the unique construction of Prestige Window Film's multi-layer technology, nor is the on-angle measurement a new measurement. Lawrence Berkley Laboratories has had software available for many years that gives angular performance data of window coatings and window films on almost any glass type available. This software and the measurements that result from it are recognized by the Department of Energy (DOE). 3M did not invent this measurement and neither did any other window film manufacturer! 

If we use this LBNL software and run our own test, comparing "on-angle" performance data of a few films, we can get to the truth. This particular test was run on clear single pane glass .120 inch in thickness with 3, 70% VLT films that have their specifications listed.

What is clearly seen here is that there is on-angle data available for all 3 brands not just Prestige. The SHGC or Solar Heat Gain Coefficient is the reciprocal of the Total Solar Energy Rejection measurement, in that The lower the number, the better the overall performance. So ignore the fact that Prestige 70 gets outperformed on every measurement by the other two films (unless you are about to make a purchase of it!), but rather, focus on the pattern.

As the sun’s angle increases, the performance of each film increases as well. So much so that when the sun is directly above the window, all of these films perform extremely well; they reject all of the sun’s energy! By the way… clear glass has a 0.00 SHGC at 90° too. Why? Obviously as the sun orientates to a higher angle above the window less energy transmits through the glass.
So this whole idea of a company’s technology making a new measurement possible or window films being designed to be unsurpassed by any other window film, in on-angle performance, is unfounded and inaccurate. 

Let’s leave the consumer with some dignity, and treat them with Integrity, as well as provide some accurate and relevant data that will not fool them into believing that one product is something that it is not. Customers also need to be Leary of the Hocus Pocus on Angle BTU test that 3M Dealers will use. The Prestige film is optimal for blocking the range of IR that the BTU meter measures, which is not the whole Infra Red range.

I know this because I was a 3M dealer for 14 years and for several of them, The Largest in AZ and one of the Largest in the U.S.A. each year! I was also a 3M Advanced Certified Trainer for over 10 years and I unfortunately, was part of the deception until I Acquired and studied the Data, Reports  and Presentations from their own Lab people showing how the film "Fooled the BTU meters"(all of which I still have).

The truth is, if we measure in degrees, the VKool beats the other films hands down! That is why we have chosen VKool as our Premier Spectral Select Film, Followed by: Avery Dennison Elite, Suntek's Ultra Vision, and Madico's Advanced Ceramic!

Window Film Manufacturers need to continue to move towards adopting standardized performance measurements, and using well respected third party agencies like the NFRC to verify these measurements. 

Window Film Dealers, (for the Customers benefit) need to educate themselves so that they do not propagate inaccurate and false information to the consumer, for if they continue to do so, it will only serve to discredit a product (Window Film) that is so badly needed in a time where energy conservation is vital.

Window Film or SunScreens, Which is Better for You?

Window Film will stop almost all of the UV rays (over 99%).	Sunscreens vary greatly, but never stop even close to 99%.
Window Film will work at its full efficiency all day, because it has no holes.	Sunscreens perform vastly different depending on the angle of the sun due to the mesh.
Window Film has a higher heat reduction per depth of darkness because it reflects the energy and never loses it's metal/ceramics so it never loses its level of performance.	Sunscreens work mainly by absorbing the solar energy, so as they get older, fade and get a looser mesh they allow in more energy.
Window Film is much clearer to look through.	Sunscreens Mesh up your view.
Window Film is much more pleasing aesthetically, looking at it from either side of the glass.	Sunscreens give a house that boarded up look and close the eyes of the house…The Windows!
Window film may cost slightly more initially, but when you consider that; residential window film has a lifetime warranty and sunscreens range from 2-5 years and only on the screen itself, and screens will go bad in less than 5 years, Clearly window film is much less expensive.	Sunscreens have a poor warranty and fail quickly (often losing 10% effectiveness in first year)
Window Film can cause thermal cracking, but all film manufacturers' warrant for this and seal failure. It is extremely rare if guidelines are followed.	Sunscreens can cause thermal breakage, but there is no coverage.
Window Film is easy to clean and maintain: Soap and water and a soft cloth, sponge or squeegee.	Sunscreens never really seem to come totally clean or look clean and if you use soap or scrub them they deteriorate more rapidly.
Window Film allows you to easily clean both sides of the glass	Sunscreens have to be removed to clean the outside glass or to see if you got the inside clean.
Window Film is installed by I.W.F.A. certified installers with set standards which are authorized by the manufacturer's and guaranteed in writing by them	Sunscreens have no known Associations, and very poor warranties.
Window Film if damaged must be replaced for a cost.	Sunscreens if damaged must be replaced for a cost.
Window Film will not protect if the window is open.	Sunscreens do not ventilate well, so a bug screen that gives no solar protection has to be put in to allow in air.
Window Film will help deter break in, by holding the glass together, and when broken for any reason, it increases safety, and in fact can be a safety film designed for bomb blast protection and theft deterrent and often deny entry.	Sunscreens are easily removed to break in and they do not even hold themselves together.
Window Film can be installed on any glass with little or no alterations, but there are limitations with certain glass.	Sunscreen mechanisms must sometime be attached to the building thus potentially damaging it or the window frame, but can usually be installed on the exterior of any glazing system
Window Film is easily removed and replaced if needed, from the inside.	Sunscreens are easily removed and often by thieves!
Window Films come in many shades and colors to suit your personal taste	Sunscreens come in different shades and colors and even decorative frames.
Window Film may cause the inside glass surface to be hotter, but most of the energy is reflected immediately and it reduces all forms of heat/energy; radiant, convective and conductive by 10 to 75%. Some Home Owners Association limit the amount of reflectivity of films	Sunscreens increase the overall temperature around it self and increase radiant heat on the outside of the glass thus allowing heat to conduct threw the unit, but they can reduce heat/energy by 10 to 70% Almost all H.O.A.'s allow sunscreens, although they may restrict the color of the Fabric.

It may seem that there is absolutely no reason to go with sunscreens over film and clearly the facts way in films favor, but there are many situations where a sunscreen may be the only or better choice.
For instance: 

• You have a covered patio and you want something to be retractable 
• You have a window that is extreme and film and a window covering are not enough to control the excessive energy or light
• You want the energy and light certain times of the year so you can remove the sunscreens or have different shades of screens for the seasons 
• You want to save a little money on the initial installation because you know you are moving in 3-5 years.
